Best Cleaning Routine For Hardwood Floors

Having immaculate hardwood floors starts with proper cleaning practices. Taking the necessary steps to prevent damage helps protect floors and cuts down on cleaning time. Here’s how to keep your hardwood floors looking and feeling clean and pristine.

Steps To Beautiful Wood Floors

Floors with Low to Medium Traffic

  1. Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum daily - use a broom or hardwood floor mop. A microfiber dust mop pre-treated with a dusting agent will pick up dust and dirt and prevent scratches. If using a vacuum, use the “hard floor” setting and be careful to always turn off the brush roll since it can scratch your floors.
  2. Damp mop or clean with an automatic scrubber (and appropriate brush or microfiber roller) monthly. Wring most of the water out of the mop so it’s damp but not sopping wet. Avoid leaving any standing water on the floor, which can damage the wood. Microfiber flat mops make the process easier and safer because they don't hold as much water.
  3. Apply a fresh coat of finish every three to five years.
  4. Sand and refinish every 10 years.

Floors with Heavy Traffic

  2. Damp mop or clean with an automatic scrubber (and appropriate brush or microfiber roller) using recommended hardwood floor cleaner multiple times a week. Wring most of the water out of the mop so it’s damp but not sopping wet. Microfiber flat mops make the process easier and safer because they don't hold as much water.
  3. Apply a fresh coat of finish every one to two years.
  4. Sand and refinish every five years.
